There’s a price list for Trump’s midterm convention

Republicans are holding their first-ever midterm convention this fall to try to prop up their candidates — and what the chairman of the event called ‘Trumpapalooza’. Here’s the catch: to attend the GOP’s midterm convention as a delegate there are ticket packages. Real tiers. Real price tags. Maybe some swag included, but you have to shell out real money.

The Texas state GOP is offering three packages for the convention. $5,000 gets you an “Honorary Guest” badge. $15,000 makes you an “Honorary Alternate Delegate.” And for $20,000, you become an “Honorary Delegate” — hotel room, on-floor seating, a convention credential, and (I am not making this up) a cowboy hat and a Texas-branded shirt, included. What a steal!

Michigan Republicans are asking $7,500 for a floor seat, or $10,000 if you’d like to bring a date. In California, some packages are reportedly running as high as $250,000.

I probably don’t need to spell out what all this means, but I will anyway: if you’re a nurse, a teacher, a small business owner, or just about any human being who doesn’t have $20,000 (let alone $250,000) sitting around, there’s no seat for you at that table. There’s only a seat for the people who can buy one.

Midwest Values PAC runs on contributions that are an average of about $35 (or one and half thousandth the cost of an Honorary Delegate), because we still believe democracy shouldn’t come with a cover charge or a VIP wristband.

We’ve got an end-of-month deadline coming up, and I’d love nothing more than to show the GOP that small-dollar donations can out-hustle a room full of honorary delegates.

P.S. If you’d like to become an “Honorary Supporter” of Midwest Values PAC before our end-of-month deadline, the entry fee is whatever you can afford. And if you donate $60 or more, you can become the proud owner of an MVP Sweatshirt. We have swag too!

Somehow, it’s been 20 years since I started Midwest Values PAC to help Democrats win elections — from progressive organizations to state legislatures to Congress to the White House — who share the values I grew up with in St. Louis Park, Minnesota.

Since 2006, Midwest Values PAC has invested more than $4 million in 341 candidates and organizations — and counting.

Of course, none of this happens without you (or supporters like you) who care enough to pitch in.

As we mark our 20th anniversary, the work is more urgent than ever. This year, we have a big job: flip the House, take the Senate, and win up and down the ballot at the state and local level.

To mark our 20th year, we’ve set an ambitious goal: 26,000 contributions by Election Day 2026.

Thanks for being part of this fight, and for sticking with us for 20 years (or for just joining — welcome!).

P.S. Over the years, okay, decades, we’ve helped Democrats win tough races all across the country by investing early, intelligently, and strategically. That’s how you flip seats. That’s how you protect democracy. And that’s how you stop the worst impulses of a president who never should have been president in the first place.
