I want to start with something you don’t get from me very often: good news.
The new polling is in, and it’s good. Not “let’s get overconfident and start measuring drapes” good, but good. Democrats are leading the generic ballot by more than 7 points nationally. That’s the kind of number that, in 2018, turned into a 41-seat wave. We’re competitive in places Republicans thought were locked down.
We apparently weren’t the only ones seeing those numbers.
Worried that his disastrous first two years of his term would sink Republicans, Trump and his operation — MAGA Inc. and friends — just dropped more than $150 million in new ad reservations in the last two weeks. In Texas, they’re outspending Democrats more than 4-to-1 to keep Ken Paxton afloat.
So that’s where we are. Good polls. Very bad money.
Here’s the thing about a wave: it doesn’t build itself. It gets built by people who decide they’re not sitting this one out.
I’ve been around politics long enough to know the difference between a good poll and an Election Day victory is what happens between now and November. Trump’s betting that money beats momentum. I’d like to prove him wrong.
Let’s not let a nine-figure ad blitz turn a winnable year into a normal one.
Al
P.S. $150 million in two weeks. I thought my races were expensive, but that’s Trump’s inflation for you.
