How the GOP plans to cut Social Security

If you were waiting for a sign to donate to Midwest Values PAC, this is it:

A new report says Social Security is on track to become insolvent by the end of 2032, putting benefits at risk of a 22% cut if Congress doesn’t act.

And I’m sure you can guess whose fault this is. Trump and Republicans’ so-called “big beautiful bill” accelerates the depletion of the trust fund. And GOP Speaker Mike Johnson recently referred to Social Security as an “entitlement” that needs to be “adjusted and fixed,” promising Republicans have a plan for next year.

That’s not some abstract budget debate. More than 70 million Americans rely on Social Security, and a cut like this would hit retirees, people with disabilities, children, and surviving family members hard. The average beneficiary could lose roughly $500 a month at a time when everything already costs too much.

Social Security isn’t an entitlement. It’s an earned benefit that Americans pay into throughout their entire working lives. It keeps more people out of poverty than any other program in the country, and we can’t let Republicans chip away at it.

That’s one more reason why we absolutely have to win back the House. Please donate to MVP today so we can help elect Democrats who will protect Social Security and flip the House next November.

Thanks,

Al

P.S. After my wife Franni’s dad died in a car crash, her mom was able to raise five kids on her own because of Social Security survivor benefits. That is a big reason why I’m a Democrat. It’s why I founded MVP over 20 years ago, why we fight so hard to help good people win important elections, and why I’m asking you to donate today.

Somehow, it’s been 20 years since I started Midwest Values PAC to help Democrats win elections — from progressive organizations to state legislatures to Congress to the White House — who share the values I grew up with in St. Louis Park, Minnesota.

Since 2006, Midwest Values PAC has invested more than $4 million in 341 candidates and organizations — and counting.

Of course, none of this happens without you (or supporters like you) who care enough to pitch in.

As we mark our 20th anniversary, the work is more urgent than ever. This year, we have a big job: flip the House, take the Senate, and win up and down the ballot at the state and local level.

To mark our 20th year, we’ve set an ambitious goal: 26,000 contributions by Election Day 2026.

Thanks for being part of this fight, and for sticking with us for 20 years (or for just joining — welcome!).

Al

P.S. Over the years, okay, decades, we’ve helped Democrats win tough races all across the country by investing early, intelligently, and strategically. That’s how you flip seats. That’s how you protect democracy. And that’s how you stop the worst impulses of a president who never should have been president in the first place.
