Well, good news out of Texas — James Talarico is officially the Democratic nominee for the U.S. Senate!
(You might know James from the time he was almost on the Colbert Show. I say “almost” because, at the last minute, the network decided that having him on television might irritate Donald Trump’s FCC. So James ended up solely on the online episode of the show.)
Here’s why James’ victory matters and why Midwest Values PAC is giving him our full support (and why you should, too):
- Polling shows the race ahead is actually winnable. Yes — Texas. Winnable.
- Democratic turnout in the primary was at a record high. Which means something important is happening down there: Democrats are fired up.
- James gets a 12-week head start on the general election because Republicans are about to spend the next three months tearing each other apart in a runoff between incumbent Senator John Cornyn and Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton.
- And in case you haven’t been reading my emails, Democrats have been winning elections all over the country lately. The momentum is real and we need to take advantage of it now — not in October.
The Senate majority could very well come down to Texas this November. And if there’s one thing I can promise you about a Texas Senate race, it’s this: it’s going to be very, very expensive.
That’s why this early window matters so much. If James can use these next few months to build momentum while Republicans are busy punching each other in the face, we’ll be in a much stronger position heading into the fall.
Thanks,
Al
P.S. There’s a very real chance that Ken Paxton wins the Republican runoff. If you’re not familiar with Ken Paxton, imagine the most corrupt politician you can think of… and then remember that even the Republican-controlled Texas House voted to impeach him.
