AVERTING CATASTROPHE

We’re just 66 days out from the most important election of our lifetime. I know it’s common for people to say this every election, but it’s not an exaggeration to say this election will determine whether we continue to be a democracy.

(While we’re on the topic of countdowns — my team would be annoyed with me if I didn’t also mention that we’re less than 12 hours out from the end-of-month deadline.)

In case you need a refresher on the stakes for this November:

  • Project 2025 — the far-right blueprint for a second Trump term — includes a proposal to consolidate presidential power and give the president more control over Justice Department criminal investigations. (Hmmm — I wonder why that might appeal to Trump!)

  • Project 2025 also proposes monitoring pregnant women, limiting coverage for birth control, reversing FDA approval for the abortion pill, rolling back efforts to address climate change, eliminating the Education Department, cutting school programs for low-income kids, and limiting veterans’ benefits. (That’s not even the whole list of terrible policy proposals!

  • Trump said he’d be a dictator on day one back in the Oval Office, and during his recent interview with Elon Musk, he again praised authoritarians like Vladimir Putin and Kim Jong Un as being “top of their game.” He even told a group of supporters that if he wins this November, they won’t have to vote again in four years. 

All of this points to the importance of the next election, don’t you think?

We are making investments to elect Democrats across the country, but there is no race more important than the one at the top of the ticket. Which is why our biggest investment will be in ground game in the battleground states that will determine who our next president will be — states like Michigan, Wisconsin, and Pennsylvania.

Somehow, it’s been 20 years since I started Midwest Values PAC to help Democrats win elections — from progressive organizations to state legislatures to Congress to the White House — who share the values I grew up with in St. Louis Park, Minnesota.
