Le Center Leader: Sen. Amy Klobuchar visits Le Center veterans

Sen. Amy Klobuchar was in Le Center on Monday, speaking with a group of veterans on a range of national and local issues that could have a large impact on them.

Six post commanders from the Le Center, Cleveland, and Montgomery Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) and Le Sueur County Veterans Service Officer Jim Golgart talked with Klobuchar on a variety of topics, including healthcare and employment.

Le Center VFW Post Commander Bill Simonette said that veterans, especially young veterans, are having trouble finding work.

“We spend millions of dollars training these young people and then they can’t get good work,” said Simonette.

Klobuchar said that veterans from after 2001 are unemployed at higher rates than other veterans. She said that the economy slowed down while they were overseas, and has affected their ability to get a job, making it an important issue.

“The last thing we want to have is unemployment for our veterans,” said Klobuchar.

Klobuchar said that there are good opportunities beginning to open up for veterans, such as in manufacturing, that pay well.

Klobuchar said that these small discussions are a great way to learn what issues are affecting people. She said that talking with people and establishing trust is an important part of the governing process.
