Sign On San Diego: Boxer visit focuses on wounded soldiers’ recovery

Senator Barbara Boxer made a stop at Scripps Memorial Hospital, Encinitas on Friday to tour its rehabilitation center and learn about its role in treating soldiers with brain injuries. She came away more than a little impressed.

“Scripps has treated over 100 Marines in the program,” noted Boxer during a brief press conference after her tour, “and 77 percent of these Marines have been able to return to their units.”

“I am so pleased with what I saw,” she said, “So filled with hope from what I saw, what goes on at this facility.”

And it wasn’t just the military successes in the past two years that impressed her. During Boxer’s tour she encountered John Miksa, a 55–year-old Carlsbad bicyclist who has almost completely recovered from a paralyzing spinal injury received when he was hit by a car.

Boxer mentioned Miksa several times during her brief speech. She referred to him as a “hero” and an example of what can be accomplished with the right “combination of the will to get well, the support of family and an incredible group of professionals who know what they’re doing and know what it takes.”
