With her U.S. Senate race stuck in a dead heat, Democratic incumbent Barbara Boxer tried to appeal to swing voters Tuesday by asserting that she will be a better protector of the environment – and green jobs – than her GOP opponent Carly Fiorina.

Boxer appeared briefly in South San Francisco Tuesday at Solazyme, a 100-employee company that is pioneering a technology that extracts oil from algae. There she stressed her opposition to Proposition 23, a measure on the November ballot that would badly damage AB32, the state’s landmark climate-change law.

AB32 requires that carbon emissions be reduced to 1990 levels by 2020. Prop. 23 would suspend the law until unemployment drops to 5.5 percent or lower for four consecutive quarters. The unemployment rate has achieved that mark only three times in the past 34 years.

“There’s no debate as to who wants to overturn this law,” Boxer said, referring to the primary bankrollers of Prop. 23 and Fiorina. “It’s big Texas oil. It’s big coal.” Two Texas oil companies – Valero Energy Corp. (more than $4 million) and Tesoro Corp. ($1.5 million) – have provided much of the funding for the initiative.

Fiorina describes AB32 as “a job killer” and supports Prop. 23, even though she calls it “a Band-Aid fix and an imperfect solution to addressing our nation’s climate and energy challenges.” The long-term solution, she said, “lies not with a single state taking action on its own but rather with global action.”

Leahy was Vermont’s junior senator back in the early 1980s when he noticed Sen. Howard Baker taking photos of the historic events that were unfolding in Congress.

Baker, a Republican from Tennessee who was majority leader at the time, told the young senator from Vermont that if he wanted to bring in his own camera he should go ahead.

Leahy’s shutter has been snapping ever since.

“I was shy at first, but now I’m not,” said Leahy, who is now one of the most senior members of the Senate. “Nobody seems to mind.”

NASHUA – Democratic U.S. Senate candidate Paul Hodes said Wednesday that more tax credits and a national standard on the use of renewable energy would help create more “clean energy” jobs.

The two-term congressman said he would pay for his proposals through the elimination of federal subsidies for the oil and gas industry plus $60 billion in targeted defense cuts.

Hodes said using more energy from wind, solar, geothermal and other renewable sources would improve the economy, clean the environment and enhance national security as the U.S. reduced dependence on foreign oil.

“Too often we focus on the word cost versus the word investment,” Hodes said in an interview. “We must invest in renewable energy.”

Hodes toured ARC Energy, a pioneer in creating technology to make highly efficient light bulbs. Since President Obama visited the Celina Avenue company earlier this year, it has grown from six to 24 jobs.

That is why, in the past two years, we have seen meaningful overhaul of Wall Street regulation, reform of credit card rules, an end to combat operations in Iraq, and the beginnings of a recovery that has brought us back from the brink of financial ruin and put us on a path to prosperity.

Here in New Hampshire, the evidence of recovery is clear. Unemployment is now lower than it was on Inauguration Day 2009, at a level 40 percent below the national average. Much progress has been made, but there is still so much more to do.

The Connecticut Chapter of the Sierra Club, in conjunction with the national Sierra Club, announces its endorsement of candidate Richard Blumenthal for election as U.S. senator from Connecticut.

“Richard Blumenthal’s experience, values, integrity, energy, and dedication as the state’s Attorney General have been instrumental in creating strong environment protections for the state. Connecticut is a cleaner, healthier and more desirable place to live and work due to his diligence and efforts” said Martin Mador, Political Co-Chair of the Sierra Club’s Connecticut Chapter. “His role in enforcement of state law and as an advocate in the legislative and administrative arenas for strong protections has substantially improved the quality of life here.”

“Richard Blumenthal has worked with unfailing determination to protect the environmental quality of Connecticut. He has pledged to continue to be a vocal and strong proponent of our environment”, said John Blake, Connecticut Sierra Chapter Chair. “We trust he will be a strong advocate for rebuilding America’s economy and creating jobs by promoting clean energy technologies, saving Americans money through energy efficiency projects, promoting smart land use policies, restoring water protections eroded by the courts, and reducing pollution. He strongly supports assisting US industry as we move away from fossil fuels and towards a clean energy economy. We expect that his environmental values will inform his future work as a Senator as strongly as they have his past work as the state’s Attorney General.”

“I have stood strong, with the Sierra Club and other environmental advocates, against powerful special interests and even the federal government when their actions or inaction have threatened Connecticut’s environment and precious natural resources,” said Blumenthal. “I thank the Sierra Club for their dedication to upholding high environmental standards and for their endorsement of my candidacy. In the Senate I will work to create clean energy jobs and fight just as tirelessly and tenaciously as I have as Attorney General to preserve and protect our environment.”

According to Wende Harper, Political Co-Chair, “Richard Blumenthal, in his position as Attorney General, has vigorously advocated for these protections. He has given notice to potential polluters, enforced the laws appropriately when violations occurred, and asked the courts to impose penalties when appropriate both to recover the costs of remediation and to serve as a deterrent to future violations. He has worked effectively with representatives of other states to require compliance with federal laws and regulations on issues which affect Connecticut.”

We need Harry Reid’s power in Washington

I recently watched a political ad implying that Harry Reid is responsible for the housing market collapse and the high unemployment rate in Nevada. Most intelligent people realize that this is a ridiculous claim. It is obvious that our current economy has been caused by greed in various sectors and the failure of Nevada to diversify its economy.

I am greatly concerned by the possibility Nevada may elect another junior senator. Do we want to leave Nevada without a strong voice in Washington? We need to be aware of how often Harry Reid has helped our state during his term in office. He has a strong voice in Washington. We need him there to help Nevada survive these difficult times.

Angle does not reflect my views and ideals. It seems that the political party she represents is attempting to make her ideology more acceptable by coaching her on how to speak during her public appearances.

Please utilize the gift of your right to vote. Vote for the candidates representing your ideals in November. Every vote does count.

Sen. Russ Feingold took a courageous stand on “Wireless Wiretapping” and stood up to a president who acted like the Bill of Rights and the Constitution were repealed by 9/11.

No wonder he received a John F. Kennedy Profile in Courage Award.

Also, as one of too few senators, he was wise enough not to allow himself to be lied into a vote for the Iraq War.

As we sadly watch the elimination of small business people and working men and women from the middle class, brought on by CAFTA, NAFTA, GATT, “Gifts to the Rich tax policies” and the Most Favored Nation Treatment of the PRC, Russ voted against all of them.

Only Russ, the fifth poorest US Senator based on personal net worth out of 100, has and will continue to have just the interests of small business owners and working men and women at heart as he continues to fight for them.
